All consignments must be free from soil, other foreign matter or debris, prohibited plants, noxious weed seeds, and living organisms such as parasitic plants, pathogens, insects, snails and mites.

All consignments must be bare rooted or wrapped in sphagnum moss which should fall off the roots at inspection. 

Note: 
  • Plants growing in sphagnum moss will be refused entry in USA.
  • Consignment is subject to inspection at the port of entry.
A copy of the import permit must be presented to an Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.


Each container must be labelled with the plant genus and species name. For containers holding more than one species, each species must be labelled separately.

It is the exporter’s responsibility to ensure the consignment is exported within 14 days of inspection and the phytosanitary certificate is issued within 14 days of the consignment being exported from Australia.

Where applicable, the exporter is to provide evidence attesting to the endorsement and present it to the Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.


A typed or legibly printed list/invoice must accompany each shipment and must contain the name of collector/shipper, the botanical name (genus and species) as well as country of origin and the country of export.

Material found to be co-mingled with prohibited or infested material will be subject to the same action as the prohibited or infested material (ie: re-export, destruction, etc).

The exporter / importer is responsible for ensuring that plant material imported into the USA complies with all applicable requirements stated in Title 7 Code of Federal Regulations Part 319.37.

Explanation of endorsements:
  • Golden cyst nematode (Globodera pallida) is not known to occur in Australia (evidence is not required)
  • Potato cyst nematode - (Globodera rostochiensis) - Present in Australia (evidence is required)
  • Endorsement 2975 - for plants grown on land (soil)
  • Endorsement 2548 - for plants grown in soilless growing media or invitro

Option 1 (EXDOC Endorsement 2975)
1) The plant was grown on land or in substrate which has been microscopically inspected by the national plant protection organization of the country in which it was grown within 12 months preceding issuance of the certificate and found free from potato cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and Globodera pallida.

Option 2 (EXDOC Endorsement 2548)
1) The plant has been grown within a secure environment in a production area that is free of potato cyst nematodes, in a soilless growing medium or invitro and has never been grown in soil nor come in contact with soil.
