Consignments are to be free from pests, soil, weed seeds and extraneous material.


Growers, packhouses and treatment facilities must be approved for export  in accordance with "Australia and United States of America Pilot Audit Program for Irradiation Treatment and Certification of Mango and Lychee (Fruit) from Australia Operational Work Plan (OWP)"

A copy of the import permit must be presented to an Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.

Where applicable, the exporter is to provide evidence attesting to the endorsement and present it to the Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.

One of the following sampling regimes must be used:

  • For lychee being exported in bunches: 150 bunches of fruit are to be inspected from each block for phytosanitary certification. 30 bunches will be randomly selected from each 150 bunch sample for destructive analysis; or all fruit suspected of infestation to be set aside for destructive analysis, whichever is greater
  • For lychee being exported as loose fruit: 300 pieces of fruit are to be inspected from each block for phytosanitary certification. 100 pieces of fruit will be randomly selected for destructive analysis; or all fruit suspected of infestation to be set aside for destructive analysis, whichever is greater.

The exporter must calculate the number of fruit that shall be required to be cut and include this extra fruit in the consignment / lot and on the RFP/NOI. The inspector will select the required sample from the consignment as per phytosanitary sampling procedures and record the destructive sampling details on the export compliance record. Any cut fruit may be discarded and the remaining quantity of fruit may be certified on the Phytosanitary certificate. This will differ to the number of cartons noted on the RFP/NOI due to the samples cut and discarded after destructive analysis (i.e. the number of cartons on the phytosanitary certificate will be less than the number of cartons listed on the RFP). The RFP does not need be amended to resolve this difference.

All treatments shall be carried out in accordance with the "Australia and United States of America Pilot Audit Program for Irradiation Treatment and Certification of Mango and Lychee (Fruit) from Australia Operational Work Plan (OWP)".

Irradiation at minimum 400 Gy has been accepted as an effective fruit fly disinfestation treatment and treatment for other target quarantine pests by the United States Department of Agriculture, in accordance with Addendum 2 of the OWP.

Treatment facility to enter irradiation treatment details into USDA IRADS website, and to provide irradiation dosimetry report at completion of treatment. IRADS treatment certificate to accompany the Phytosanitary certificate.

The exporter is to provide evidence attesting to the treatment and present it to the Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.

The treatment is to be shown on the Phytosanitary certificate as: IRRADIATION AT MINIMUM 400 GRAY
Option 1 (EXDOC Endorsement 1645)
1) The fruit in this shipment was treated by irradiation with a minimum absorbed dose of 400 Gy.
