Inspections for insects under bark should be carried out during bark removal.
The Export Control Act 2020 and the Export Control (Wood and Woodchips) Rules 2021, require an export licence issued by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment for any exports of two tonnes or more of:
- woodchips;
- wood in the round (i.e. logs);
- wood with a cross sectional area of at least 225 square centimetres
- the wood is sourced from an area covered by a Regional Forest Agreement (RFA). Details regarding the areas covered by RFAs can be found here: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/forestry/policies/rfa.
- the wood is sourced from a plantation.
If an export licence is required, it is the responsibility of exporters to obtain a licence to export prescribed wood or woodchips prior to export.
Exporters can find information on how to obtain an export licence for prescribed wood or woodchips on the departments website - https://www.awe.gov.au/agriculture-land/forestry/industries/export.
Any enquires on what is classed as prescribed wood or woodchips should be directed to: wood.export@awe.gov.au, or call (02) 6272 4353.
Copy of treatment certificate must accompany consignment.
Treatment must be undertaken within 21 days prior to export.
Treatment options are:
Methyl bromide fumigation:
- 48grm/m3 for 24 hours at 21 degrees celsius or above;
OR
- 56grm/m3 for 24 hours at 16 - 20 degrees celsius;
OR
- 64grm/m3 for 24 hours at 11 - 15 degrees celsius;
OR
- 72grm/m3 for 24 hours at 5 - 10 degrees celsius;
OR
- 80grm/m3 for 24 hours at 4 degrees celsius
Sulphuryl fluoride fumigation:
- 64grm/m3 for 16 hours at 21 degrees celsius or above (at Normal Atmospheric Pressure).
Heat or kiln sterilisation:
The timber must undergo a high humidity treatment in an enclosed chamber in which the dry bulb temperature is not less than 74 degrees celsius and the wet bulb depression is not more than 2 degrees celsius.
The core temperature of the timber must be maintained at a minimum 74 degrees celsius for the duration of the treatment. The duration of the treatment will depend on the thickness of the timber (see below). The thickness of the timber is the distance between spaces in the stack, regardless of the thickness of individual boards.
The treatment duration begins when the temperature and humidity in the chamber have stabilised.
All timbers must have an average moisture content of less than 12 percent based on over-dry weight or mass.
| Maximum thickness of timber(mm) | Duration of treatment (hours) |
| 0-25 | 4 |
| 26-50 | 6 |
| 51-75 | 8 |
| 76-100 | 10 |
| 101-150 | 14 |
| 151-200 | 18 |
| Thickness unkown | See below |
If the thickness of the timber is not stated on the treatment certificate or is known, a verification inspection upon arrival at Timor Leste Approved Premises is required to ensure that the timber has at least one dimension less than or equal to 200mm and to verify that the stated duration of the treatment is adequate.
Ethylene oxide fumigation:
- Under initial minimum vacuum of 50 kilopascals at 1500 grm/m3 for 4 hours at 50 degrees celsius;
OR
- 1500 grm/m3 for 24 hours at 21 degrees celsius
Permanent Timber Preservation treatment:
- At recommended manufacturers requirements.
