Consignments are to be free from pests, soil, weed seeds and extraneous material.

A copy of the import permit must be presented to an Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.

Consignment must be fumigated with methyl bromide not more than 14 days prior to export at:
  • 48 grm/m3 at 21 degrees Celsius or above for 24 hours;
OR
  • 56 grm/m3 at 16 – 20 degrees Celsius for 24 hours;
OR
  • 64 grm/m3 at 11 – 15 degrees Celsius for 24 hours.
Note:

 The Department's minor use permit for methyl bromide does not allow for methyl bromide treatment periods of less than 24 hours.

OR

  • Ethanedinitrile (EDN) at APVMA label rates.

OR

the consignment can be heat treated (Kiln-dried or chemical pressure impregnation) through the use of steam, hot water or dry heat, at a core temperature of 56 degrees Celsius for at least 30 minutes.

OR

The wooden article was manufactured from kiln dried wood. In this case endorsement 5180 must be used.

The exporter is to provide evidence attesting to the treatment and present it to the Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.


In the case of the article being made from kiln dried wood, a manufacturer's declaration or certificate must be presented as evidence to the Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.

1) The wooden article was manufactured from kiln-dried wood based on manufacturer's declaration and/or certificate.

Import permit dated 29 October 2024 and advice from the South African NPPO that EDN is an approved fumigant for timber products.
