These import conditions areapplicable to dried hay and straw for industrial use only. The productsmust not be used for agricultural purposes including as stockfeed.

Consignments are to be free from pests, soil, weed seeds and extraneous material. 

A copy of the import permit must be presented to an Authorised Officer at the time of inspection. 

Hay and straw of pasture or cereal plant are prescribed goods, therefore an RFP must be raised, the product inspected by an Authorised Officer (AO) and an export permit issued even when a phytosanitary certificate is not required.

Note:

  • Stem and wooden parts' diameter must not exceed 2 cm.
  • Plant materials of Khat (Catha edulis) is prohibited to import into South Africa.
  • On arrival inspection will be done by the Quarantine Officials for the presence of pests.

The importers are required to declare to the Quarantine Officials on arrival that the dried plant materials will not be used for propagation and any seed present will be used for processing only.
