Consignments must be cleaned or brushed to be free from insects, diseases, plant seeds and other impurities or contaminants.

Potato seeds for propagation from any other states other than the Victoria and the western part of New South Wales is prohibited.


Seed potatoes must be practically free of soil. The department’s soil tolerance applies in this regards (contaminants include more than 25g of soil per sample taken for 2 per cent inspections and 25g of soil in the combined samples for the inspection lot for 600 unit inspections).

A copy of the import permit must be presented to an Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.


Seed potatoes are to be packaged in new proliferated bags.

Explanation of endorsements

Endorsement 5582:

Seed potatoes must be sourced from a national seed potato certification scheme. Exporter to provide evidence attesting to the endorsement and to present to the Authorised Officer at time of inspection. 

Seed potatoes must be treated with appropriate fungicide, insecticide and bactericide after grading.

Option 1 (EXDOC Endorsement 5582)
1) Zebra chip (Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum), Ring rot (Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus), Potato cyst nematode (Globodera pallida) and Wart disease (Synchytrium endobioticum) are not known to occur in Australia.
2) Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd), Golden potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) are not known to occur in the area of production. 
3) A representative sample was inspected and found free of White-fringed weevil (Naupactus leicoloma) and Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis).
4) A representative sample was visually inspected and lab tested and do not exceed a tolerance level of 0.03% for bacterial soft rot (Erwinia species), Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and Bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum).
