Consignments must meet the requirements of the Export Plan for fresh produce from Australia to New Zealand. The Export Plan is available through Micor Plants in the 'Documents' section. Access is restricted and requires a logon.
Exporters may choose to use the following contaminant tolerances during phytosanitary inspection as referred to in the Import Health Standard 152.02. The permitted tolerances are for a 600-unit sample.

All watermelons exported to New Zealand must:
Have had a measure applied for Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV):
- Sourced from an approved Pest Free Place of Production;
Have had a measure applied for fruit flies Bactrocera Cucumis (Cucumber Fruit fly) of either:
- Sourced from a pest free area (Riverina, Sunraysia, Riverland, TAS);
- In-field controls;
- Fumigation with Methyl bromide at 32 G/M3 for 4 hours at a flesh temperature of 21-26°C or above.
OR
- In-field controls;
OR
- Irraditation at minimum dose of 150 Gy;
Important: Growers are to register properties with the department and have their property confirmed as free from Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV) based on state issued freedom certification. Property freedom from CGMMV must be confirmed by the department prior to exports being permitted. Information regarding registration can be obtained through contacting the Horticulture Exports Program at Horticulture Exports Program.
Explanation of the endorsements
If exporting using endorsement 7602, the exporter must provide a state or territory issued PFPP certificate to the Authorised Officer at time of inspection.
ATTENTION: For watermelons packed in-field use the following endorsements
Endorsement 7942
Applies to watermelons exported under the infield controls and methyl bromide fumigation pathway and packed IN-FIELD.
Endorsement 7943
Applies to watermelons exported under the infield controls and winter window pathway and packed IN-FIELD.
Explanations of EXDOC endorsement(s), and documents required for each endorsement are detailed in the document section of Micor.
Where applicable, the exporter is to provide evidence attesting to the endorsement and present it to the Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.
All treatments shall be carried out in accordance with the Export Plan.
Fumigation
Where watermelons have be subject to in-field controls for Bactrocera cucumis (Cucumber fruit fly), and not exported during Winter Window (May to 1 September), they must also undergo fumigation with methyl bromide at 32grm/m3 for 4 hours at 21-26°C or above.
The treatment is to be shown on the Phytosanitary certificate as:
- FUMIGATED WITH METHYL BROMIDE AT 32GRM/M3 FOR 4 HOURS AT 21-26 DEGREES CELSIUS
Irradiation
- Irradiation at a minimum of 150 Gy
For irradiated product, the treatment is to be shown on the phytosanitary certificate as:
- IRRADIATION AT MINIMUM 150 GRAY;
For irradiated consignments – the treatment certificate is to accompany the consignment to New Zealand.
Reconditioning
Reconditioning treatments with methyl bromide must be conducted in accordance with the Acceptance of offshore methyl bromide fumigation treatments, found in the documents section of Micor.
For reconditioning fumigation treatments to be recognised by New Zealand, they must be listed on the phytosanitary certificate in the treatment section using the EXDOC treatment code RE-CON.
It is at the exporter's discretion on whether or not to put a reconditioning treatment on the phytosanitary certificate.
