Exporter is responsible for the sampling and testing of Medicago sativa seed consignments for adventitious presence of unapproved genetically modified seeds.

MPI requires all consignments of Medicago sativa (alfalfa/lucerne) imported into New Zealand to be representatively sampled, tested, and found to be free of unapproved GM seeds.
Alternatively, the seeds must be sourced from companies with MPI approved quality assurance systems which demonstrate equivalence with PCR testing every consignment of GM Medicago sativa.
Any consignment that is found to contain unapproved GM seeds will not be permitted to enter New Zealand and will be re-shipped or destroyed.
Explanation of the endorsements
Endorsement 947:
- Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), Pea early browning virus and Peanut stunt virus are not known to occur in Australia. No supporting evidence is required to endorse freedom from these pests.
- An area freedom certificate stating that seeds were produced in a pest free area free of Bacterial leafspot of alfalfa (Xanthomonas campestris pv. alfalfae) is required to endorse freedom from this pest.
Endorsement 1028:
- Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), Pea early browning virus and Peanut stunt virus are not known to occur in Australia. No supporting evidence is required to endorse freedom from these pests.
- A crop inspection report stating that seeds were produced in a pest free place of production free of Bacterial leafspot of alfalfa (Xanthomonas campestris pv. alfalfae) is required to endorse freedom from this pest.
Option 1 (EXDOC Endorsement 947)
1) The seeds have been produced in an area where Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), Pea early browning virus and Peanut stunt virus are absent,
2) The seeds have been produced in a pest free area free of Bacterial leafspot of alfalfa (Xanthomonas campestris pv. alfalfae).
Option 2 (EXDOC Endorsement 1028)
1) The seeds have been produced in an area where Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), Pea early browning virus and Peanut stunt virus are absent,
2) The seeds have been produced in a pest free place of production free of Bacterial leafspot of alfalfa (Xanthomonas campestris pv. alfalfae).
