Shelled macadamias (i.e. macadamia kernels) are permitted into Japan without an accompanying phytosanitary certificate unless the end use is for stockfeed, fertiliser or any other input in agricultural production.
In-shell macadamia nuts must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate.
Kernels which have been highly processed (roasted, etc) may be exported without a phytosanitary certificate and they will not be subject to on-arrival inspection.
Japan's Food Sanitation Law enforced by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) applies for processed kernels. Exporters are responsible for confirming the food safety requirements which apply to their products and ensuring compliance.
