Unless specified within the commodity list below, the Department is unaware of any specific requirement for edible non-prescribed goods that are for export to Japan.
1.2. Conditions
Compliance with Japan's Food Sanitation Act. No certification is necessary for export to Japan.

Exporters are not required to obtain an import permit.

2.3 Prohibited products
The Department is not aware of any prohibited edible apiculture products to Japan.
3.1 Government certification
The Department understands government certification is not required to export edible apiculture products to Japan. However, exporters are encouraged to confirm the importing conditions through their importer, or if needed the government authority of Japan.
3.2 Supporting documents and exporter declarations
The Department is not aware of any requirement for supporting documents and exporter declarations.
Edible apiculture product must comply with Japan's Food Sanitation Act.
Japan honey quota
Under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA), there is a quota for honey:
- Quotas are issued on a first-come, first-served (FCFS) basis with the quota year running in line with the Japanese financial year: 1 April to 31 March.
- The amount of quota available annually for honey is 160 TN.
To receive a quota certificate for a consignment of honey to Japan exporters need to complete the JAEPA quota application form and email it to the Department's Quota Unit (quota.admin@aff.gov.au). Once approved, the Quota Unit will email the quota certificate directly to the exporter.
The Department is not aware of any exemptions being granted by Japan. Exporters are encouraged to confirm if any exemptions apply by contacting their importer, or if needed the government authority of Japan.
