Processed foods containing partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs or trans fats) are not permitted to be imported into the United States of America (US).

Edible non-prescribed goods must comply with US food standards relating to labelling and public health. Please see

Certificates/ documentation
Non-prescribed foods do not require a certificate, but will be inspected on arrival in the US and monitored for residues of pesticides, veterinary medicines and contaminants.
Exporters of blended honey are required to provide a laboratory analysis report confirming the absence of residues in the consignment.

Compliance with relevant Australian domestic requirements. Non-prescribed inedible goods usually do not require a certificate.
1. Preconditions for market access
1.1 Import permit
Exporters are not required to obtain an import permit, however they are encouraged to confirm the importing conditions through their importer, or if needed the US government authority.

1.3 Prohibited products
The Department is not aware of any prohibited edible apiculture products for this market.
2. Documentation requirements
2.1 Government certification
Government certification for edible apiculture products is not required for this market.
2.2 Supporting documents and exporter declarations
Other commercial documents such as the bill of lading, packing list and commercial invoice are required to be submitted by the exporter.
3. Other requirements
Non-prescribed goods, including edible apiculture products, will be subject to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection on arrival at the US port of entry, and tested for residues of pesticides, veterinary medicines, and contaminants (including adulteration with corn syrup). Chloramphenicol is illegal for use in bees and other food-producing animals in the US.
Edible non-prescribed goods, including edible apiculture products, must comply with US food standards relating to labelling and public health. Please see US Food Regulation
for detailed information. Also, honey must be shipped in containers that meet the requirements of the FDA and US Customs.
The US Department of Agriculture requires the following on the honey labels to pass the import inspection:
- a grade, sampling, or continuous inspection mark
- the country of origin
- words that are legible and in English
- the words "Product of" followed by the country where the honey came from
4. Exemptions granted by the United States of America
The Department is not aware of any exemptions being granted by the US. Exporters are encouraged to confirm if any exemptions apply by contacting their importer, or if needed the US government authority.
