Importing country requirements

It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.

An import permit is required.

Contact the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for information about the process required to import animals into Samoa from Australia.

Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

The following conditions were sourced from a permit issued in February 2021.

Each live dog must comply with the following requirements:

  • Within twenty-one (21) days of transport to Samoa, each dog must be treated for tapeworms with an effective dose of Praziquantel.
  • Within four (4) days of transport to Samoa, each dog must be treated with a product known to be effective against intestinal roundworms, eg. Pyrantel pamoate.
  • Within four (4) days of transport to Samoa each dog must be treated with a long acting topical preparation with efficacy against ticks, fleas and lice.
  • Each dog must have current vaccination status against the following diseases: Canine Distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, leptospirosis and canine parvovirus.
  • The dog is showing no signs of infectious or contagious diseases, and other contaminants.

Within four (4) days of departure, a Government Veterinarian must certify the following:

  • The dog has complied with the above listed conditions.
  • The Government Veterinarian must provide a signed and stamped International Animal Sanitary Certificate detailing all required treatments, doses used and dates of treatment.
  • The dog certified must be identified as the same dog that is being exported to Samoa.

Each dog is subject to quarantine inspection upon arrival in Samoa.

Note
All quarantine items are subject to inspection on arrival in Samoa. Non-complying consignments, or those not true to label may be subject to seizure, treatment, re-export or destruction at the importer's expense.

It is the importer's responsibility to be aware of and to ensure compliance with the requirements of all the other regulatory organisations prior to and after importation. Examples include the Ministry of Revenue (Customs Department), Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Meteorology, and the Ministry of Health.

Import conditions may be subject to change at the discretion of the Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF). This permit may be revoked without notice.

It is the exporter's responsibility to arrange a transit permit with the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries if required.

Pre and post arrival quarantine requirements

The importing country may have specific pre and post arrival quarantine requirements and you should check this.

Return to Australia

If your animal is returning to Australia, you should make yourself familiar with the Department's requirements for importing live animals into Australia. This is important as your animal may have been exposed to diseases that do not occur in Australia.
