Importing country requirements

It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.

An import permit and health certificate are required.

Contact the Department of Agriculture and Livestock National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority (NAQIA) for information about the process required to import animals into Papua New Guinea from Australia.

Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

Health certificate

As importing country requirements may change without advice to the Department you should check the import permit and/or the country website carefully at the time of preparation for export.

Certifying officers must review the import permit(s) and conditions provided by the exporter and ensure that the issued document(s) are consistent with the permit(s).

1. Eligibility

a) This protocol refers only to caged pet birds

  • - The caged pet bird(s) must have been in the ownership and possession of the premises/owner for a minimum period of one year immediately preceding pre-export quarantine.
  • - ​A maximum number of birds to be imported must be agreed upon with the Chief Quarantine Officer (Animals) of Papua New Guinea at any one time.

b) Poultry species (chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, pheasant, quail or other game birds), or pigeons (Columbia livia) do not qualify as caged pet birds.

c) Only birds permitted entry by Conservator of Fauna, Department of Environment and Conservation will be accepted for import.

2. Pre-export requirements

a) The bird(s) shall be examined by a qualified veterinarian for any clinical signs of infectious or contagious disease during the isolation period and prior to export.

a) Virulent Newcastle disease and highly pathogenic avian influenza have not been reported in Australia during the six month period immed​iately prior to the date of this certification.

b) Australia is free of psittacine pox.

c) No illness/death of the bird(s) under pre-export quarantine was reported by the owner during the 45-day pre-export period.

d) Within 48 hours of export, the bird(s) was(were) examined by: ………………………………… (name), a qualified veterinarian.  I have seen his/her report and am satisfied​ that no suspicion/evidence of infectious or contagious disease or external parasites was found in the birds and that the bird(s) was (were) fit to travel.

Permission to move birds out of Australia

You may need permission under wildlife trade laws to move birds out of Australia. Refer to the Department's International wildlife trade requirements. There is specific guidance for non-commercial wildlife trade for public exhibition, scientific research, cons​ervation breeding and personal use.
