Note
Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

On 27 November 2025, the department received advice from the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture that import permits for pet cats and dogs will no longer be issued.

The consignment must be accompanied by a veterinary health certificate stating that the animal is:

  • Free of rabies
  • Has received rabies vaccination.

Only two pets of each species (cats and dogs) are permitted per traveller.

As importing country requirements may change without advice to the Department you should check the country website carefully at the time of preparation for export.

Other requirements

Transport requirements

The importing country may have specific transport requirements and you should check this.

Pre and post arrival quarantine requirements

Return to Australia

If your animal is returning to Australia, you should make yourself familiar with the Department’s requirements for importing live animals into Australia. This is important as your animal may have been exposed to diseases that do not occur in Australia.
