It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animals meet the importing country requirements.

An import permit is required and obtainable from the Iran Veterinary Organisation (IVO). Contact the IVO or the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Canberra for information about the process required to import animals into Iran from Australia.

Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health certificate

IVO updated the health requirements (IHR) for importing live fish in October 2025.

Should exporters seek to export live fish (including for ornamental or breeding purposes), please contact the Department’s regional office in the Australian state or territory from where the consignment will depart, as government-to-government negotiations through the National Program in Canberra are required.

Permission to move aquatic animals out of Australia

You may need permission under wildlife trade laws to move aquatic animals out of Australia. Refer to the Department’s International and wildlife trade requirements​.

Export from Australia of Australian native hatchery bred fingerlings or ova should be accompanied by approval of the hatchery facility from the appropriate State or Federal authority. Refer to the Department’s Exporting fish and fish products from Australia for information about exports for direct human consumption.
