Importing country requirements

It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements. Additional information to assist exporters with how to prepare reproductive material for export is available on the Department’s website.

An import permit is required and is obtainable from:

Note
Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

The health requirements given in this entry are a guide only, based on conditions found on a recently issued import permit for a consignment of reproductive material to China from Australia.

Health certification

  1. Australia is free from –

    1. Foot and mouth disease
    2. Peste des petits ruminants
    3. Sheep pox
    4. Goat pox
    5. Wesselsbron disease
    6. Nairobi sheep disease​
    7. Contagious agalactia

  2. The premises of origin for the donor females are to be officially confirmed to be free from-

    1. Scrapie for 5 years
    2. Tuberculosis for 3 years
    3. Maedi/visna for 5 years
    4. Caprine retrovirus infection for 5 years
    5. Brucellosis for 3 years
    6. Paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) for 2 years
    7. Chlamydia disease clinically for 2 years
    8. Border disease clinically for 2 years
    9. Mucosal disease clinically for 2 years
    10. Campylobacter fetus clinically for 2 years
    11. Bluetongue clinically for 3 years within a 50km radius

  3. During the period from 30 days prior to semen insemination to 7 days after collection of embryos, the donor animals shall be held at the embryo transfer centre in isolation from other animals.

  4. During the period mentioned above the animals will be individually clinically examined and tested for the following diseases with negative results-

    1. 4.1 Brucella ovis and abortus 30 days prior to insemination by complement fixation test (CFT) negative is less than 10iu/ml

    2. 4.2 Paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) by intradermal Johnin PPD test at the cervical site negative being a reaction of not more than 2mm at the site of injection and complement fixation test (CFT) negative is less than 50% fixation at 1:20

    3. 4.3 Bluetongue:

      1. 4.3.1 30 days prior to insemination agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID), complement fixation test (CFT) negative being less than 50% fixation at 1:5, and for animals coming from north of 28 degrees in Western Australia; other than the following Pasture Protection Boards in New South Wales:- Broken Hill, Wentworth, Balranald, Moulamein, Deniliquin, Jerilderie, Corowa, Urana, Albury, Hume and Bombala; Queensland; and the Northern Territory chick embryo blood inoculation (3 passages for virus examination

      2. 4.3.2 30 days after embryo collection by agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) and

      3. 4.3.3 from the semen collected take 3 straws for chick embryo semen inoculation (3 passages for virus examination) with only males whose semen gives negative results being used for insemination of the donors.

    4. 4.4 Mucosal disease and Border disease 30 days prior to insemination and at the time of collection by examination for virus in blood serum with 2 passages in tissue culture (cultures to be checked for virus by immunofluorescence test)

    5. 4.5 Chlamydia 30 days prior to insemination complement fixation test (CFT) negative is less than 50% fixation at 1:4

    6. 4.6 Akabane:

      1. 4.6.1 30 days prior to insemination by serum neutralisation test (SNT) negative at 1:4
      2. 4.6.2 30 days after collection of embryos agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID)

    7. 4.7 Retrovirus infection:

      1. 4.7.1 30 days prior to insemination by agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) or enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test (ELISA)
      2. 4.7.2 30 days after collection by agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) or enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test (ELISA)

  5. The collection and handling of the embryos will be done under the supervision of an Authorised Australian Veterinarian. Embryos were collected at: XXXXXXXX

  6. The membrane of the embryos will be in sound condition and the embryos will be flushed (washed) 10 times according to the methods suggested by the International Embryo Transfer Society.

  7. The embryos will be placed immediately after collection into vials which will be sealed, numbered, and identified as to donor dam and sire and recorded with test results, dates and places of insemination and collection of embryos.

  8. The embryos will be stored at the centre under the supervision of the authorised veterinarian and allowed to be shipped once negative results are received at the end of the quarantine period following embryo collection.

  9. The males donating the semen were from an Australian approved artificial breeding or embryo transfer centre and meet the disease freedom and isolation, testing and treatment requirements specified for the donor females.

  10. Prior to export, the container in which the embryos is to be transported was sealed by either the semen collection centre veterinarian or an Official Veterinarian, using seals bearing the marks:

Other requirements

  1. DAFF can commence the quarantine and inspection procedure on animals to obtain genetic material for export to China after receiving the relevant import permit from the Chinese authority.

  2. The Chinese will send veterinarians to the embryo transfer centres of origin and related laboratories to cooperate with the Australian veterinarians in carrying out inspections and quarantine requirements.

  4. The males donating the semen must be from an Australian approved artificial breeding or embryo transfer centre and meet the disease freedom and isolation, testing and treatment requirements specified for the donor females.

Documentation

In addition to the health certificate, the export must be accompanied by a declaration from the Embryo Transfer Centre (ETC).
