Importing country requirements

It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.

An import permit is required.

Import permits can be requested from the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

Refer to the Department’s websites for current information about exporting animals (including any suspensions).

Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

Health certificate

Day-old birds (birds not more than 72 hours of age) or hatching eggs must be accompanied by the health certificate issued by the official veterinarian within 24 hours prior to shipment certifying that:

  1. The day-old birds or hatching eggs originate from a breeding establishment and a hatchery supervised and regularly inspected by an official veterinarian or veterinarian accredited by official veterinary administration and that the hygiene and disease security procedures in breeding flocks and at the hatchery are in conformance with the current World Organization for Animal Health Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

  2. The country/zone/premises (within the radius 25 km) of origin of the old day-old birds or hatching eggs is recognised free of evidence of H5 subtype and H7 serotype avian influenza virus for a period of at least six months immediately prior to the export of the day-old chicks or hatching eggs destined for export to Bhutan.

  3. The day-old birds or hatching eggs originate from breeding flocks whose birds have been in Australia since hatching and have not been in contact with any imported birds or birds of a lesser health status.

  4. The day-old birds or hatching eggs originate from a premises of origin that has had no reported cases of Newcastle disease, Infectious bursal disease, Fowl Cholera, Infectious Laryngotracheitis and Pullorum disease for the past l2 months, and Avian encephalomyelitis, Chronic Respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Avian Leucosis, Egg-drop Syndrome, Infectious Bronchitis, Infectious Coryza, Infectious synovitis caused by Mycoplasma synoviae,​​ avian tuberculosis for the past six months.

  5. The day-old birds or hatching eggs originate from breeding flocks that have not been vaccinated for avian influenza and no live Newcastle disease vaccine or any other live vaccines have been administered during three months immediately prior to the export of the day-old chicks or hatching eggs to Bhutan.

  6. The day-old birds or hatching eggs were placed into a spill proof new or clean and disinfected containers and sealed using an official seal.

Permission to move birds out of Australia

You may need permission under wildlife trade laws to move birds out of Australia. Refer to the Department’s International wildlife trade requirements. There is specific guidance for non-commercial wildlife trade for public exhibition, scientific res​earch, conservation breeding and personal use.
