Importing country requirements

It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.

Contact the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in Brazil or the Embassy of Brazil in Canberra for information about the process required to import animals to Brazil from Australia. Refer to the guidance document, 'How to bring your dog or cat to Brazil (PDF | 289KB)' for additional information.

You should take care to confirm the importing requirements at the time of export of the animal.

Note
Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

Health certificate

Brazil recognises that Australia is declared a rabies free country and rabies vaccination is not required. However, in March 2023, the Brazilian Government advised that unvaccinated animals will receive a rabies vaccination upon arrival. They recommended that all animals are vaccinated against rabies prior to export to reduce any delays in disembarkation in Brazil.

An International Veterinary Certificate (DOCX | 62KB) issued by an Australian licensed veterinarian is required.

Return to Australia

If your animal is returning to Australia, you should make yourself familiar with the Department's requirements for importing live animals into Australia. This is important as your animal may have been exposed to diseases that do not occur in Australia.
