Non-prescribed goods, including edible apiculture products, will be subject to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection on arrival at the US port of entry, and tested for residues of pesticides, veterinary medicines, and contaminants (including adulteration with corn syrup). Chloramphenicol is illegal for use in bees and other food-producing animals in the US.
Edible non-prescribed goods, including edible apiculture products, must comply with US food standards relating to labelling and public health. Please see US Food Regulation for detailed information. Also, honey must be shipped in containers that meet the requirements of the FDA and US Customs.
The US Department of Agriculture requires the following on the honey labels to pass the import inspection:
- a grade, sampling, or continuous inspection mark
- the country of origin
- words that are legible and in English
- the words "Product of" followed by the country where the honey came from
