Importing country requirements
It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.
The requirements for importing live animals into the Malaysian state of Sarawak may be different to those for Malaysia more generally, with locally imposed arrangements in place. You should consult the separate
Micor entry for Malaysia if necessary.
An import permit and health certificate are required.

There are
Import Conditions and Regulations for the importation of dogs and cats into Sarawak, Malaysia and you should check these.
- Note
- Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.
- The importation into the Malaysian state of Sarawak of certain breeds of dog may be prohibited. You should check the importing country authority about any current prohibitions and requirements.
Health requirements
There are no agreed conditions or health certificate for the importation of dogs or cats into Sarawak from Australia.
Certifying officers must review the import permit(s), any conditions provided by the exporter, the website of the importing authority, and ensure that the issued document(s) are consistent with the permit(s).
The following conditions were sourced from the Regulations for the importation of dogs and cats into Sarawak, Malaysia (effective 3 April 2023):
(1) The dog(s) must be accompanied by a Health Certificate signed by a Government Veterinary Officer of the exporting country certifying that the:
- animal(s) have been examined within the seven days immediately and found to be free from rabies infection and any clinical sign of infections or contagious disease of dogs or cats
- animal has been vaccinated against Rabies with killed anti-rabies vaccine.
Special conditions
The following conditions were sourced from the Regulations for the importation of dogs and cats into Sarawak, Malaysia (effective 3 April 2023):
Animal Identification and Vaccination Certificate
- a) Animal must be of age three (3) months and above;
- b) Dogs and cats must be identified by a microchip that can be read by Trovanâ, Destronâ or other ISO compatible reader.
- c) The health certificate, certification on rabies, vaccination and test (if any), and related other document must bear the identification microchip number that has been implanted.
- d) The core vaccination certificate must also bear the details (name of veterinarian, name and address of the veterinary practice).
- e) The animal(s) must not be pregnant.

- b) American Staffordshire Terrier
- c) Staffordshire Terrier
- d) American Bulldog
- e) Japanese Tosa (Tosa-Inu, Tosa-Ken)
- f) Akita Inu (Japanese Akita, Akita, Great Japanese Dog)
- g) Neapolitan Mastiff
- h) Fila Brazileiro
- i) Dogo Argentino
- j) Russo-European Laika
- k) Owtcharka
- l) Canary Dog
- m) Tibetan Mastiff
- n) Kai Dog

The importing country may have specific pre- and post-arrival quarantine requirements and you should check this.
- Note
- At this time, post-arrival quarantine in Sarawak is not required for animals from rabies free countries/regions (United Kingdom, Eire, Northern Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden and Brunei).
