It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements. Additional information to assist exporters with how to prepare reproductive material for export is available on the Department’s website.

The import and transit of reproductive material into the European Union (EU) is strictly regulated under EU legislation and enforced by the Department through Departmental officers in the regional office from where the reproductive material is to be exported.

Rules for the entry into the EU of germinal products of dogs and cats have not been harmonised. Member States may, following an evaluation of the risks involved, apply national rules, provided those rules comply with the requirements laid down in paragraph 1 of Article 234 of Regulation (EU) 2016/429 and provided that they take into account the matters referred to in Articles 235 and 236 of that Regulation.

Note

It is illegal to own or import certain breeds of dogs (or their reproductive material) which are considered dangerous in Norway. This ban also applies to crossbreeds where there is one or more dangerous breed in any proportion.

Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

The Australian registered veterinarian who collected the semen must complete and sign the certificate template for import of dog semen to Norway. The certificate template for import of dog semen to Norway can be obtained by contacting the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.
