It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.

An import permit and health certificate are required.

Note

Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Exporters must ensure the animal meets any health conditions included in the import notification issued.

The date and number of the import permit must be shown on the Veterinary Certificate of Health issued by the Official Veterinary Services of the country of origin.

The following conditions were provided in a permit issued by the authorities in Mauritius in August 2021.

1. The dog showed no clinical signs of Rabies and other infectious diseases the day prior to shipment or on the day of shipment:
   
   AND EITHER
   
   
   1. a) The dog was vaccinated or revaccinated in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer of the vaccine that was produced in accordance with the Terrestrial Manual and,
   
   
   2. b) was subjected not less than 3 months and not more than 12 months prior to shipment to an antibody titration test as prescribed in the Terrestrial Manual with a positive result of at least 0.5 IU/ ml in a laboratory approved by the government veterinary authorities of the exporting country.
   
   
   OR
   
   
   1. Was kept in an approved quarantine station for six months prior to shipment under supervision of Veterinary Authority of AUSTRALIA.

   Note

   There is no approved quarantine station in Australia where an animal could undergo 6 months pre-export quarantine. Exporters therefore need to arrange for their animals to be prepared in accordance with 1. a) and b).



2. If a female dog, it is NOT PREGNANT (puppies born in quarantine shall be destroyed without compensation).


3. The dog has been treated with a long lasting insecticide (indicate name on the Certificate) against ectoparasites and that it is free from external parasites at the time of export.


4. The dog must be vaccinated against Distemper/Hard Pad Complex (maladie de Carre), Infectious Hepatitis Leptospirosis and Canine Parvovirus Infection not less than two weeks prior to the date of despatch by air and certified accordingly by a Veterinary Surgeon duly registered in the country of origin stating the make of the vaccine(s) used, the batch number and the date of its expiry and the date on which the said dog was vaccinated.


5. The dog has been tested and found to be free from ehrlichiosis within 45 days prior to departure using the indirect fluorescent antibody test.


6. The dog has been tested for Brucella Canis using the slide agglutination test (Microscopic agglutination test) with a negative result.
   

The owner is required to register his/her dog compulsorily with the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW), once landed in Mauritius.

Identification requirements

The animal must be identified with a microchip or permanent tattoo and the identification details must be shown on the accompanying certification. It is recommended that microchip brands should conform to the International Standards Organisation (ISO) standard 11784 or to ISO Standard 11785.

Transport requirements

The dog must come on an International Air Transport Association (IATA) approved kennel and not on lead and only by direct air service to Mauritius (no transit en route is permitted).

Pre and post arrival quarantine requirements

Upon arrival to the Republic of Mauritius, the dog is required to be quarantined for a minimum period of five working days at Division of Veterinary Services, Reduit, Mauritius.

If your animal is returning to Australia, you should make yourself familiar with the Department’s requirements for importing live animals into Australia. This is important as your animal may have been exposed to diseases that do not occur in Australia.
