Importing country requirements

It is the exporter's responsibility to ensure that the animal meets the importing country requirements.

Contact the Japanese Animal Quarantine Service for information about the process required to import animals into Japan from Australia.

Note
Where an importing country issues an import permit, the exporter must ensure the animal meets any requirements in the permit.

Health requirements

As required by the importing country.

Note
When completing the Certificate for dogs, cats, foxes, raccoons, or skunks to be imported into Japan from the rabies-free designated region (Form AB), the ‘Date of identification’ means the date that the microchip was implanted. Refer to the Guide to importing dogs and cats into Japan from the designated regions (PDF 836 KB) for more information.

Other requirements

Transport requirements

Dogs and cats should be transported by direct flight/ship from the exporting country (designated region) to Japan.

If transported through Non-designated regions (transit), a ‘seal for the transport cage’ or an ‘additional certificate on transportation (ANNEX)’ is necessary. The numbered tamper-proof seal issued by the Australian Department of Agriculture must be applied by an Australian Government Veterinary Officer and the number on the seal must be referenced on the Australian Government Certificate of Health to Accompany Animals.

Return to Australia

If your animal is returning to Australia, you should make yourself familiar with the Department's requirements for importing live animals into Australia. This is important as your animal may have been exposed to diseases that do not occur in Australia.

Basis for Micor entry

Based on importing country website and information.

Entry last reviewed 30 January 2023.
