General Requirements

This ICR is for truffles for consumption only and the following species may be exported.

Tuber aestivum (Burgundy truffle) (synonym T. uncinatum)
Tuber borchii (Bianchetto truffle) (synonym T. albidum)
Tuber magnatum (Italian white truffle)
Tuber melanosporum (Prigord black truffle)

Authorised Officer must refer to the Import Health Standard (IHS) of NZ: Fresh Truffles for Human Consumption prior to inspection. https://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/law-and-policy/requirements/ihs-import-health-standards/

A copy of the import permit must be presented to an Authorised Officer at the time of inspection.

​Consignments are to be free from pests, soil, weed seeds and extraneous material.

Truffles must be; fresh, whole, mature, and export quality.

Fresh truffles must be washed and excess moisture removed prior to export. Where more than one species are exported in the same consignment, each species must be separately packaged and labelled.

Country or place of origin (state) where the truffles were produced or harvested from must be stated on the consignment.

All consignments must be packed in clear, clean and new material and shipped in a secure manner to prevent contamination by regulated pests.

All consignments of fresh truffles must be clearly identified with the scientific name (genus and species).

Each consignment of fresh truffles must be accompanied by a morphological report from the exporter, specifying the identity of the species in the consignment. Examination must be undertaken by persons competent to identify species by visual and aroma characteristics.

The report must be issued on company letterhead by a person authorised to act on behalf of the company. The report must include the following information;

  • authorised person's name, signature, job, title and date of issue
  • truffle species and genus
  • MPI import permit number, and
  • the following statement

"Each truffle has been identified as a species eligible for import under the import health standard: Fresh Truffles for Consumption: HIS.FP.Truffles."
